Teens Turning to Other Social Media Sites After Facebook

Teens are turning to other social media sites, which is old news by now. The real questions are: why are they leaving Facebook and what social media sites are they currently interested in? According to Bianca Bosker of the Huffington Post, teens view Facebook as the “mom and dad version of Twitter and Instagram.” Teens perfer social media sites that their parents are less involved in.

Piper Jaffray has collected information on teens and their social media involvement. Here is the chart that shows social media popularity, amongst teens, over the past two years.

According to Piper Jaffray’s findings, Facebook’s teen importance has fallen 19% in just over two years. On the other hand, Instagram’s importance has risen 18% in the same amount of time. Teens are turning to other social media sites with Twitter and Instagram being the forerunners.

Not only are teens turning to other social media sites, they are also turning to social media apps, which are quickly gaining importance in this industry. What are the some of the widely popular apps and why?

Many teens are turning to Vine, Wanelo, and Snapchat. Vine is just over a year old and is one of the most used applications. It allows users to post 6 second looping videos. On the other hand, Snapchat has become the top third party messaging app in the US, according to Sandvine, a network traffic specialist.

There are tons of other social media sites and apps that I didn’t mention.
