Social media is constantly changing. New sites and apps are constantly being created and the amount of people that use them are increasing at a rapid rate. With that being said, new interesting social media facts are being brought to our attention.

A big turning point for social media was when Beyoncé decided to ditch the typical methods for releasing an album. Instead, she posted a picture on Instagram with the title “surprise.”  That album sold over 365,000 copies on the first day. According to the New York Times, “the release also showed the marketing value of no marketing.” Underestimating the power of social media came to a stop that day in 2013.

  • Selfie” is now a word in the Webster Dictionary. “An image of oneself, taken by oneself using a digital camera for posting on social networks.”
  • 700 billion minutes are spent on Facebook, monthly. 700 billion minutes = 11.667 billion hours = 486 million days. My point is, that’s a crap ton of minutes.
  • The average day brings 190 million tweets.
  • 93% of marketers use social media for business.
  • 1 in 5 divorces involve social media.
  • Two new members join Linkedin every second.
  • There are over 1.15 billion Facebook users. If Facebook were a country, it would have the third highest population right under China and India.
  • More people in the world own a cell phone than a toothbrush.
  • 53% of millennials would rather lose their sense of smell than technology.
  • Lastly, social media has overtaken porn as the most popular Internet activity.
